We have all heard that saying, ‘Write about what you know.’ But maybe it should be write about who you know. When people ask me where I come up with all the oddball names and characters in my ChickenBone Mystery Series, I just tell the truth…I disguise my relatives just enough so they can’t recognize themselves.

I am often told I lean on old outdated stereotypes for my cast of Southern characters. That usually comes from somebody who has never been to the deep South. When it comes to nicknames and folks a bit off kilter, I haven’t even scratched the surface of real people that I grew up around and people you will meet if you get off the interstate and turn down a long tar and gravel road.

I have characters in my books with some odd names…

DumpTruck…SweetThang…Polecat…RoadKill…Greasefire and Percy Beauregard Dixie Doogan, known in six counties simply as ‘Sugar’.

But for every name I make up, you can head down to rural Georgia where I grew up and find FIVE more colorful names every FIVE miles.

And you would be even more surprised to find out when you run across a Snog, Snake, Stumpy or Stinky they would not be some toothless redneck living in a trailer up on blocks. They just might be a plumber, a lawyer, a coach or even your Senator. That nickname planted on them early in life and it just kept on following them around like an old dog searching for a bone. And truth be told, many wear it as a Badge of Honor.

People also tell me my books have a somewhat slow pace to them at times. I agree. That’s the way we do things in the rural South. In a big city, if your neighbor wants to borrow your lawnmower, he just walks up to your yard and straight out says, “Can I borrow your mower?”

But not out where the corn grows. It goes more like this. Your neighbor drives up in his truck, gets out, pets your dog and gives you a wave.

“Hey, Stumpy,” he says. “How’s them peanuts of yours growing?” Stinky will start out.

“Good, good,” Stumpy will reply. “Deep in the dirt and hanging heavy.”

“Yesterday was a hot one wasn’t it?”

“TV said it’s gonna be worse today.”

            “That so?”

            “That’s what they say.”

This will go on for about another five minutes or so, then Stinky will finally get around to it…

“Well, I just come by to see if I could borrow that mower of yours for a bit?”

That’s just the way it is down South. The weather is hot, the beer is cold and folks know you don’t get in a hurry. You just slow down and smell the Collard Greens.

Cliff Yeargin has spent his life as a ‘Storyteller, traveling the U.S. as a Writer/Producer/Photographer and Editor in Broadcast journalism.

He began his career in the mountains of Western North Carolina where he worked with two college buddies, both who went on to become Sports Broadcasting Legends. Yeargin did not, but he did shoot the only video of the first 3-Point goal in the history of NCAA College Basketball. This is NOT fiction…you can look it up!

His travels as a broadcaster have taken him to dozens of Major League ballparks, World Series, Super Bowls, Final Fours, NASCAR, National Championships and he managed to convince his bosses for many, many years that staying at a Baseball Spring Training camp for two months involved hard work and sacrifice.

He has written stories in more places than you can count. In dugouts with rats under his feet, smelly locker rooms, planes, trains, hotel bars, buses at 4AM outside Detroit. All while submitting a staggering number of falsified expense reports.

He grew up on a rural cattle farm in Georgia, which taught him many valuable life lessons, such as never poke a big bull in the rear with a big stick.

A proud Bulldog graduate of the University of Georgia, he has now returned to his native state and lives in a downtown Atlanta neighborhood.

There is no Atlanta neighborhood known as ChickenBone…but there should be.

  8. HI! AND THANKS FOR CHECKING OUT THE SERIES! The series has it roots in TWO things...I grew up in rural Georgia, where you find the kind of folks that show up in the books...They are REAL...and some my relatives!! And secondly, I spent a lifetime around Baseball and I was always pulled toward the 'marginal' player...not the superstars...they had better stories...so I wanted to have Jake tell that story...combine that with a love of a good mystery and that's how it started!!
