Ryan peered into the darkness and listened carefully. His unspoken prayer was answered when all he heard was silence. He may have been in some of the most dangerous places on earth in his lifetime, but creepy crawlies freaked him out.

Before long, Ryan’s right hand started to throb. Looking down, he noticed his knuckles had turned white from holding the fire poker in a death grip.

Five minutes later, Hunter rejoined Ryan with two LED flashlights. Ryan took one of the flashlights and decided to keep the poker with him on the quest before them. He chided himself for not taking the Glock, which was secured in the glove compartment of the car. Quickly weighing the probability of significant danger, Ryan decided not to retrieve the gun from the car.

Using his shoulder as leverage, Ryan pushed the door open wider and shone the powerful flashlight into the pitch-dark abyss looming in front of him. The light barely cut through the blackness which unsettled Ryan. Ryan admitted that night vision goggles would have been helpful at this moment. He still was not convinced there weren’t any creatures lying in wait to attack as soon as he stepped inside.

“If this was used as some type of storage area, there must be a light source. I doubt Philip would be fumbling around in the dark,” Ryan postulated while Hunter remained silent using Ryan as a human shield.

Trying not to think about what he might touch, Ryan gently leaned the poker against the fireplace and focused the flashlight beam on the right-hand wall while running his hand across it looking for a light switch. Approximately five feet into the doorway, Ryan found what felt like a light switch. Flipping the switch on, the space became dimly illuminated when the overhead fluorescent lights flickered to life.

“Holy crap!” Ryan yelled, startling Hunter.

Hunter poked his head around Ryan and was astonished at what he saw.

A spiral granite staircase descending to the depths below presented itself to the two men. The secret passage was about seven feet tall, six feet wide, and fifteen feet deep, by Ryan’s brief assessment. The space was just large enough to fit the staircase. The air was stale, musty, and damp, causing Ryan to instinctively wrinkle his nose. It was clear no one had ventured down these stairs in many years based on the dust and cobwebs.
