Scattered Legacy by Marlene M. Bell

This blog tour is organized by Lola's Blog Tours and the tour runs from November 29 until December 12. Follow the Tour.

To outsiders, the relationship between Manhattan antiquities assessor Annalisse Drury and sports car magnate Alec Zavos must look carefree and glamorous. In reality, it’s a love affair regularly punctuated by treasure hunting, action-packed adventure, and the occasional dead body.

When Alec schedules an overseas trip to show Annalisse his mother's birthplace in Bari, Italy, he squeezes in the high-stakes business of divesting his family’s international corporation. But things go terribly wrong as murder makes its familiar reappearance in their lives – and this time it’s Alec’s disgraced former CFO who’s the main suspect.

Accompanied by friend and detective Bill Drake, Annalisse and Alec find themselves embroiled in a behind-closed-doors conspiracy that threatens the reputation and legacy of Alec’s late father – linking him to embezzlement, extortion, and the dirty business of the Sicilian Mafia. The search for the truth sends the trio straight into riddles, secrets, and an historic set of rosary beads. Annalisse leads Alec toward a discovery that is unthinkable, and events that will change their futures forever.

Scattered Legacy is the third in Marlene M. Bell’s thrilling Annalisse series, which weaves romance, crime, and historical mystery into addictive tales to instantly captivate fans of TV show Bones or Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code.

Excerpt

“We believe Josh falsified invoices with certain clients and moved money to offshore accounts without my consent. I was so angry I removed him without hearing his side of it. As far as I’m concerned, he’s totally responsible whether he was directly or indirectly involved. I wish I’d handled the situation differently. My short fuse got in the way when I felt Dad’s business was being used illegally as a giant retirement fund for Josh. He would know whether Dad used illegal monies from the racing team. We’re waiting on the board’s decision to prosecute Josh.”

“We have to find him.”

“He found me,” Alec grumbles. “Josh called me while I was in Mom’s office. I haven’t heard from him since I let him go.” He shakes his head. “He wants my help.”

Gen’s sitting at her desk in front of her favorite collection of astronomy books, staring at the wall. Her eyelids are rimmed red, and she’s grasping a wadded tissue in her hand. My stupid fear of a blackbird’s feather placed in an envelope pales against her sadness at the reminder of a lost soul mate. She witnessed her husband’s head explode, as I did, when Pearce fought gunmen on the yacht. It’s surreal when someone you know has died in front of you. Dreamlike, until their life jolts away and a body is left in place of a vibrant human being, like the man with his grin on the tabloid cover. Gen loved her husband deeply. No matter how many times I assure myself it wasn’t my fault what happened, Pearce might still be alive if the Mushasha jewel—Stop it. Samantha Freeman, my best friend, wouldn’t give up her matching horse bracelet either. The curse was powerful, and it pulled us along. Pearce’s fate was sealed the day he was born. Only God knows what’s in store for us. I have to show Alec and Gen that Pearce’s short existence was meaningful. His record must remain untarnished for Gen and her son.

“Has anyone been smoking? It smells like something’s burning.” I check the wastebasket for cigarette butts and find it recently emptied. “Alec, please sit before you fall down.”

His chair squawks along the tile in front of the Victorian pedestal desk. “Mom, I’m sorry.” Alec pats his mother’s hand across the blotter. “I didn’t think what seeing Dad again might do to you.”

“He’s gone, dear. There’s no bringing him back. Believe me, I’ve tried.” Gen smiles and dabs the corner of her eye. “Honey, how do we get in front of this bad press? Signorile’s sale must go forward. It’s decided. You and Annalisse are to be freed of the corporation to enjoy yourselves. Phooey on this bad timing, before your trip and all.” She glances at me and points to the armchair.

“Have you heard from Global Star Class yet? What’s the best move?” I ask Alec.

“Embezzlement matters. Serge LeBlanc is a straight-up guy, so he won’t peddle the Signorile acquisition to his board while there’s a scandal hanging over it.” He rubs between his brows and takes out his phone. “We need Bill’s expertise on this one.”

The call is made via speakerphone so we can all be a part of it. It’ll be great to hear Bill’s voice again. After Kate’s mysteries were solved a few months ago, Bill returned to his other investigations with his partner, Dan Chappell. Bill’s a good friend to Alec, and he helped us both cope with Kate and Ted’s nightmare at Walker Farm and in Massachusetts. The uncle I thought had committed suicide came back for revenge. Ted is being held in jail now for the plot to ruin Kate. Bill doesn’t know where Kate went, which was our hope when he dropped her at the airport, so she’s in charge and determines when she makes a return. That mother-daughter talk will have to wait until she’s ready. She left me with only a letter explaining that she is my birth mother, and I have a father who doesn’t know I’m alive. It’s little wonder my decision not to marry Alec at this time is frustrating for him. I’m so afraid something in my past will hurt Alec or his mother.

“Hey, I was about to call you. Have you heard mainstream news?” Bill Drake asks.

“You’re on speaker with Mom and Annalisse. I’m at the gallery, and yes, we’ve read the gossip rag’s trash.” Alec lays the phone on the desk.

“Good morning, Generosa, Anna. I hope you’re both well.”

“Hi, Bill,” I chime, imagining what color palm tree shirt he’s wearing with his chinos. “Did we catch you at a bad time?”

“Not in the least. I’m in Connecticut, finishing up a case. What’s up?”

“Can you break away to join us in Lecce?” Alec looks away from the speakerphone.

“Lecce… Where’s that?” Bill asks.

“Italy,” he says, staring at an imaginary spot above my head.

Gen whips around to glare at Alec. “Son, where are you going?”

I’m just as shocked. It’s stifling enough to have Brad, Alec’s bodyguard and chauffeur, along on the trip. Since there’s already three of us, one more will ensure zero privacy with Alec. Not the trip of my dreams. We’ll put off the romantic venture for another time.

“Do you want me to reopen the earlier investigation on the Signorile accounts?” Bill asks.

“What investigation? You never mentioned this before.” Gen grabs another tissue.

Alec raises a palm toward his mother. “It’s more complicated than that, Bill. I spoke to Josh already.”

“Is that right? Wow. Surprised he’d take your call after being fired.”

Alec erupts into mirthless laughter. “Bring all you’ve got on Josh Jennings before, during, and after his tenure with Signorile. Go deep, really deep into the slimy mud if you have to, and meet us at the Challenger hangar.”

“Text me the address and gate. When and what time?”

Alec whispers to me, “What time will you be ready in the morning… six, seven?”

“Name it.” This is Alec’s mission, and I’m along for support, even though our beautiful, scheduled destination is a smoking pile of rubble blown up by an ex-employee I’ve never met.

“We don’t have time to waste. Can you make it from Connecticut to the hangar, say, by seven thirty a.m.? You’ll be able to get your beauty rest on the plane. Pack for at least a week. The ocean air is nice during midday and a little cool at night.”

Lecce must be near the coast. Alec notices my confusion because he walks by and sits on the arm of my chair.

“Anything else?” Bill asks.

“Yeah. A woman was found murdered in Josh’s office, wrapped in concertina wire. He’s the suspect.”

Alec’s admission triggers the weird visual in Gen’s office. Is that the woman I saw? I don’t know whose silence is more deafening, Bill’s, Gen’s, or mine.

I stared at the old woman. She was sitting on a rock in the mouth of a cave in front of us. She gawked at me as she sipped from a bottle of green Gatorade. How had a romantic hike up to the mountain lake taken such a strange turn? She told Han and me that her name was Mnemosyne, but that she was called Nemmy.

Nemmy? Could she be the woman from the stories I’d been told? Was that even possible?

Gaspar, the ghost who’d been telling me tales, had a daughter called Nemmy. She was King Gaspar Reuben’s youngest daughter of three. The one who had been tutored in black magic by an evil crone witch and bestowed with dark powers. She had lived a century ago but had partaken of the rumored fountain of youth found on the sinister island of Gladstone. Was this her? If it was, why did she look so old and frail? And how was she here?

I shivered and took a step closer to Han. He put his arm around my shoulders and the weight of it allowed me to exhale.

We had hiked for hours to reach the alpine lake. It was baffling to find an elderly woman sitting this far up. She didn’t look to be the type who’d be able to climb a set of stairs, let alone a mountain. She had no hiking supplies with her, and she wasn’t dressed for it either, in her long dress that seemed more suited for a carriage ride in the Middle Ages. When I asked her if she had hiked up here by herself, she laughed at my question, saying that no, she didn’t get here by herself, but then she changed the subject. As if that wasn’t crazy enough, she told us her name. I’m almost sure she said Nemmy. Her strange appearance, plus that familiar name, made it possible that she was the witch from the stories the ghost had told.

“You are the recently discovered Caldwell relative who fell through the mirror into Destiny Falls,” she said. It wasn’t a question. It was clear that she knew who I was. “How kind of you to deliver yourself right to my front door. I have something especially for you, Helen.”

“It’s Hayden.” I corrected her automatically.

“Ah, right. Hayden.” She made an effort to stand up but was struggling, so Han and I helped her. As soon as she was upright, she raised her arm and pointed her bony finger inches from my face. With her other hand, she pulled a handful of herbs, dust, and dirt from a pocket and tossed it at me. “Ostend mee-hi virtute!” she shouted.

In a flash, Han tugged me by my arm and pushed me behind him. It was a sweet protective gesture that I appreciated in the face of this deranged old woman.

The woman did a panicky little jig, shook her hands wildly, then grabbed in her pocket for more of the mixture. She tried to throw it around Han and into my face. She repeated what she had just said. Only much more exuberantly. Then she stomped her feet in frustration and repeated loudly, “Virtute! Virtute!”

I coughed at the dust and squinted at her. “What is she doing?” I whispered out of the side of my mouth to Han.

“I have no idea. But it sounds like some kind of spell,” he side-whispered back. “Slowly back away.”

The woman who could be Nemmy rolled her eyes. “I’m not a superhero, but you know I can still hear you,” she whispered back to us out of the side of her mouth.

We both turned to look at her. She laughed heartily and we heard her mumbling, “A spell! What will they think of next?” Then her laughter abruptly stopped. Her face sagged and she growled at us to leave her alone.

What if she was just a random senior citizen and her name a coincidence? Maybe I misunderstood her, and she said her name was Emmy. “Are you sure you don’t want us to wait until your hiking partners come back . . . Emmy?” I asked.

She pursed her lips and shook her head. “Your benevolence is exhausting, young woman, and you’re more than I anticipated. Just leave me in peace.” She waved her arm and turned away from us. “Go! Go away!” she yelled. Then she stepped into the entrance of the cave, leaving us standing there gaping at the cavernous opening.

Thankfully Dead by Kate Bell & Kathleen Suzette

Ah, Thanksgiving. A time for family and friends to gather around the table and overindulge in holiday treats. And for some, a time to die.

When my new boyfriend, Detective Alec Blanchard, suggested entering the annual Turkey Trot race, I had no idea I’d be running for my life. Exactly where does the pumpkin pie and whipped cream enter in?

It was bad enough that philanthropist Todd Spellman was murdered right in broad daylight, but for it to happen on a major holiday really put a damper on the celebrating. My friend Lucy and I decided we needed to help Alec out with the investigation, even though he was less than thrilled about it. But investigating was in our blood, so we did.

Deadly Thanksgiving Sampler by Gen Jones & Elizabeth Ashby

Quilt appraiser Keely Fairchild just wants to have a quiet little Thanksgiving dinner at home with her boyfriend, but as the guest list grows, so do the distractions from meal preparations. First she gets dragged into investigating the theft of miniature quilts that were supposed to be featured in the guild's entry in the Danger Cove Thanksgiving parade, and then she stumbles onto a bigger mystery: who killed a local quilter and what did her death have to do with a sampler quilt she'd made to depict her life's story?

Keely struggles to figure out which elements of the quilt are clues and which are red herrings, and uncovers that the dead quilter and her mechanic husband may not have been as innocent as they seemed. Did the husband kill his quilting wife, or could it have had something to do with a stalker, an angry customer, or even a best friend who might actually be a frenemy?

If Keely can't figure it out, her life—and death—may end up depicted in her own DEADLY THANKSGIVING SAMPLER.

The Hunt for the Elusive Mastermind by Barry Forbes

About the Book

A wholesome family mystery series for tween and teens, 10-15 years

Wait a sec. I mean, how could that even happen? Who told the gang about the money? And those Bronx accents, that's another thing. Did the men really come all the way to little old Prescott... from New York City... to execute a perfect kidnapping? Then there's the mystery man who arrives late to the party. Who is he and what's his role? Is he the elusive mastermind, or is it someone else? (Just the idea of it gives Kathy a headache.) Is he the one responsible for such an elaborate plan? If so, he must be one very smart individual, indeed - he manages to fool the FBI and Detective Ryan. The mystery searchers take on one of their most dramatic cases ever. As usual, the foursome utilizes technology to break the case wide open, but Pete's impulsiveness gets him into a world of trouble. Then, finally, the car door opens and there sits the elusive mastermind! Who would have ever guessed his identity?

Excerpt

In complete darkness, the mystery searchers crouched beside the Mustang and talked next moves.

“Time to call for the troops,” Suzanne said, pulling out her cellphone.

“Wait a sec,” Pete said. “How do we know he’s home? He could’ve just circled the block while we were turning around back there. Maybe he’s on his way to Alaska and left the light on to fake us out.”

“Alaska?” His sister gave him some serious side-eye. “Where did that come from?”

“Just saying.”

“Well, don’t.”

“Google says this is where he lives,” Suzanne insisted. “The chances are pretty good he’s in the garage counting money right now.”

“What’s your point, Pete?” Tom asked quietly.

“I don’t like it. How stupid would we look if the guy’s already taken a hike?”

“Excuse me,” Kathy protested. “We should have called Detective Ryan half an hour ago.”

“What would he do?” Pete argued. “Just what we’re doing—hanging around to see if another gang member shows. But he’d also creep over there and make sure he’s home. Which is precisely what I’m gonna do.”

“Or no you’re not!” Kathy cried out.

“You can’t be serious!” Suzanne gasped. “Detective Ryan will skin us alive. We need to call him—now.”

“Watch me!” Pete bolted out from behind the car, crossed the gravel road, and jumped over an old wooden fence. He began a two-hundred-yard dash to the homestead, ducking low all the way.

Just as he reached the driveway, an automatic yard light triggered.

“Oh, Lord,” Kathy moaned.

An illuminated view of the cottage revealed a junkyard out front with a couple of stripped-down cars wasting away in weeds. What appeared to be an old washing machine and a rust-stained dryer sat between them. It was easy to see that the bungalow had seen better days.

“Now there’s a house that needs a paint job,” Suzanne quipped.

Pete hustled over to the right side of the cottage. The other three held their collective breath—Kathy in mute terror—as her brother peered into a kitchen window. It appeared to have closed curtains, but he turned their way and gave a thumbs up: He’s home. He disappeared around the corner of the house. The yard light faded away. It took seconds for their eyes to adjust to the darkness, then . . . nothing.

The threesome waited for another three minutes before Suzanne touched the screen on her cellphone.

How Everything Turns Away by Steven J Kolbe

Ezra James used to be a big deal: Harvard graduate, FBI agent, beautiful wife. After being accused of fabricating evidence in a serial killer trial, he finds himself suspended, on the verge of a divorce, and working security at a posh Catholic school in Chicago. Then something out-of-the-ordinary happens: a young student-teacher is attacked during a Christmas pageant and left for dead in the snow with a noose around her neck and an electrical burn. Plus, she's pregnant. Ezra, along with up-and-coming police detective, Lucia Vargas, and school chaplain, Fr. Remy Mbombo, must work fast before the culprit returns to finish the job.

Excerpt

Gorecki raised a hand. “I’m sure you’ve seen a lot, Mr. James, underage drinking, monitoring in-school detention duty and such, but this here’s serious.”

“You’re a cop, you said?” Vargas said. “Not in Evanston PD. What precinct?”

“I’m a special agent, actually.”

Both detectives raised their eyebrows.

“DEA?” Gorecki guessed.

Now he did produce his badge. “FBI, Chicago field office.”

Gorecki inspected it. “Special Agent James,” he said mostly to himself. Then a glimmer of understanding came over his face. “I—” he started to say but stopped abruptly.

This happened sometimes. Ezra would be having a perfectly normal conversation with somebody, but then a headline would flash through their mind, and their whole demeanor changed. For an entire year, Ezra’s name appeared in the Chicago Tribune, sometimes making the front page. Eventually, people remembered seeing one of those headlines.

His jaw clenched as he waited for Gorecki to continue.

“You’ve helped a lot,” the detective said, biting his lip. “You can rejoin your friends inside.”

Dahlia Donovan wrote her first romance series after a crazy dream about shifters and damsels in distress.  She prefers irreverent humour and unconventional characters. An autistic and occasional hermit, her life wouldn’t be complete without her husband and her massive collection of books and video games.

BOOK ONE – POISONED PRIMROSE – BLURB

Meet Motts and the quirky cast of characters in her world. Poisoned Primrose is a quintessential cosy British mystery and an all-round fun story to throw yourself into. Autistic, asexual, and almost forty, Pineapple “Motts” Mottley flees London with her cat and turtle to a quaint cottage in Cornwall. She craves the peace of life in a small village. The dead body buried in her garden isn’t quite what she had in mind, though. Unable to resist her curiosity, she falls directly into a mess of trouble and runs head-first into the attractive detective inspector, Teo Herceg. She tries to balance her business with the investigation, but as the killer focuses on her, staying alive becomes trickier than advanced origami. Will Motts survive the onslaught of murderously bad luck? Can she solve the mystery before it all spins out of control and off a cliff?
